Natural Crystalline Graphite Has A Hardness Of 1 To 2 (Mohs Scale) And A Specific Gravity Of 2.09
To 2.25. It Has A Metallic Lustre, Sometimes Dull Or Earthy And Gives A Silevry/Black Streak.
Optically It Is Opaque Even On The Thinnest Edges.It Has A Perfect Basal Cleavage And This Coupled With Its Extreme Softness Gives It A Slippery Feel. Graphite Melts At About 3650 C. At 600-700 C It Slowly Decomposes In The Presence Of Oxygen To Form Carbon Dioxide. Like Some Forms Of Carbon, It Burns Only At High Temperature.
Strong Oxidents Such As A Mixture Of Hot Nitric Acid And Potassium Chlorate Will Oxidize It Completely. It Is Normally Unaffected By Acids, Drychlorine Gas Or Molten Alkali At Low Red Heat.
